Congratulations to Nikolus and Jacob, thank you for representing King City High School so well!
On Monday, February 10, 2025, Hillyard Technical Center hosted the skills portion of the Northwest District SkillsUSA Skills and Leadership Contest for the seven Career and Technical Education schools in our District. This contest covered Automotive Refinishing, Automotive Service Technology, Carpentry, Collision Repair, First Aid/CPR, HVAC, IT Services, Maintenance and Light Repair, Nurse Assisting, Welding, and Welding Fabrication. The leadership portion of this contest was then held at Northland Career Center in Platte City on Friday, February 14 covering areas such as Health Knowledge Bowl, Prepared Speech, Extemporaneous Speech, and others. The skill level and production of these contestants were judged by volunteers representing the trades from St Joseph and the surrounding areas. Students were graded on resumes, written tests, performance, and skill levels required in their chosen trades and ranked with the goal of achieving first, second, or third place receiving Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. This affords our competitors the opportunity to showcase the skills learned in their chosen programs, compete with peers from the northwest district, and develop a network of contact with potential employers.
In total, 187 high school junior and senior student competitors from across the District registered for these competitions of which Hillyard Technical Center students earned 10 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals, and 6 Bronze Medals:
King City Students receiving Gold or Silver are Nikolus Schellhorn in Automotive Refinishing and Jacob Jensen in Auto Service Technology.
The Gold and Silver Medalists listed above now advance to the State SkillsUSA Contest which will be held at State Technical College of Missouri in Linn, Missouri, April 10-12. Should any of these contestant place first in their state contest, they will advance to the National Championship held in Atlanta, Georgia, June 23-27 and compete with champions from across the country.
